Suvendu Banerjee, affectionately known as The Harmoniumwala, is a distinguished exponent of the Gaya Gharana, a pioneering lineage that revolutionized solo harmonium playing in India. As the fifth generation in his family dedicated to this art form, Suvendu carries forward a rich legacy of innovation and emotional depth in harmonium performance.

Beginning his musical journey at the age of seven under the tutelage of his grandfather and guru, Pandit Deb Kumar Banerjee—a legendary harmonium virtuoso—Suvendu was immersed in the gayaki ang (vocal style) that defines the Gaya Gharana. This unique approach imbues his performances with a lyrical quality that resonates deeply with audiences. Further refining his craft, he studied under Pandit Shyamal Chatterjee, a renowned sitar maestro of the Senia-Maihar Gharana and the seniormost disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar.

A graded artist of Prasar Bharati (All India Radio) and an empanelled artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Suvendu has performed on esteemed platforms such as the Swara Samrat Festival in Kolkata, the Doverlane Music Conference, and the Indian Habitat Centre in Delhi. His performances have also graced international stages, including the Ali Akbar College of Music in California and the BAMNE Festival in Liverpool, UK.

Beyond performance, Suvendu is a passionate educator, offering harmonium workshops and online classes to students worldwide. Through his teachings, he aims to share the profound beauty and depth of the harmonium, inviting learners to explore its expressive potential.
