About K.J. Diliip

K.J. Diliip, a talented violinist in both traditional Carnatic and contemporary styles, has built his reputation as an exceptionally versatile musician capable of combining the two styles together by using creativity to create a new modern expression of music through experimentation and exploration, while maintaining his ethnic roots from South India, where he grew up and began learning about South Indian Classical Music (Sampradaya).

Born into a musically rich family, K.J. Diliip received his early training from his father, Shri K.J. Shyamasharma and his grandfather, Shri K.J. Krishna Bhat, is an accomplished Carnatic musician. He developed his skills through training with the great violinist Padma-Bhushan Sageeitha-Kalanithi M.S. Gopalakrishnan, a master of the violin and one of the most revered musicians in South India, who helped to define Krishna Bhat's own unique style as well as his virtuosity on the instrument.

Diliip has quickly gained a reputation as an artist in Indian classical music through his various solo violin performances, collaborative work and unique musical endeavors throughout the years. The most interesting part of Diliip's musical life is that he performs both violin duets and violin-vocal duets with his wife, Vid. Ila Diliip, making them one of the first Indian couples to present Carnatic violin duet concerts as well as combined vocal-violin performances. Their concerts are known for their musical depth, harmony, and captivating stage presence.

Diliip has been actively involved with contemporary music as well as traditional concert music through collaboration with many music directors for film soundtracks and other music projects. The instrumental pieces that he has produced for the movie Monsoon Raga were very well received and seen by millions on the Internet, demonstrating his capability of uniting traditional/classical-type music with a modern audience.

Started by Diliip, a fusion music group titled "Lakkshya" is where he explores how he can both perform by himself musically utilizing the raga system and create an entirely new artistic output that embodies his creativity as a musician through this project. Thus far, this experimentation has allowed him to blend his experience in jazz, fusion, and world music with the rules of the traditional Carnatic raga system to find new musical expressions within the genre of Indian classical music.

Throughout his career, K.J. Diliip has received several prestigious recognitions, including the M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship Award, the Lalgudi Jayaraman Endowment Award, and the Best Violin Accompanist Award by the Karnataka Fine Arts Council, and honors such as Yuva Shree Kala Bharathi and Naada Ila Maamani for his outstanding contributions to Carnatic music.
