Sahil Vasudeva, a New Delhi-based Indian pianist and composer in its most pioneering aspect, has earned himself rave accolades through his innovative approach to Western classical music, which he aims to exercise into being assimilated into modern times. The whole ordeal with the piano for Sahil started at the age of seven when his mother procured one during a vacation and thus sparked a passion that has remained torching since then; he trained under the guidance of Dr Nelson Harper at Denison University, Ohio, followed by Irina Biryukova and the late John Raphael at the Delhi School of Music.
His repertoire includes masterpieces by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Ravel, as well as his original compositions. Sahil has performed at celebrated venues and festivals, such as the India Art Fair, Kochi Biennale, and the National Gallery of Modern Art, and earned his name for devising and performing in deeply expressive and technically brilliant performances.
This is the setting in which Sahil's most signature work, The Un-Recital, happens. The premise of the mixed-media presentation is piano music combined with theatre, storytelling, and visual projections. This project aims to move beyond such traditional recital formats, another means of producing a far more immersive experience as audiences are drawn into the world of classical music – all in an approachable, emotionally stimulating environment.
He has also composed for independent films, art installations, and advertising projects. He holds the belief that reflections of personal and larger societal issues in his music may evoke emotions and invite thoughtfulness. Besides solo performances, Sahil collaborates with visual artists, poets, and performers to create interdisciplinary pieces that cross the traditional borders of music.
Sahil longs to build a more profound listening and appreciation culture for classical music in India. He understands the plight of independent musicians lacking infrastructure and public support but remains committed to his vision of transforming the country's musical landscape.
Through his performances, compositions, and collaborative projects, Sahil Vasudeva is creating a new definition of the modern pianist in India – beyond the mundane definition, stretching tradition with bright innovation and honesty of emotions.
