Pandit Rakesh Chaurasia—Bringing Life to the Bansuri, Note by Note
Pandit Rakesh Chaurasia, born in Allahabad on 13 January 1971, is well known as one of India's greatest bansuri (bamboo flute) masters. As nephew and pupil of the great Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Rakesh continues a rich tradition of music—but in a voice uniquely his own.
He learned the flute at age four, intuitively attracted to its haunting, otherworldly sound. After years of intense study in the Maihar Gharana and the constant support of his uncle, he developed a style that is as contemplative as it is technically complex. His playing embodies both the richness of tradition and the novelty of innovation, and he is equally loved by traditionalists and open-minded listeners.
A Raga-Ly Grounded Journey, a Global Reach
Though rooted in Indian classical music, Rakesh Chaurasia has never hesitated to take risks. In his performances, the transition from sad ragas to assertive, intergenre fusions is seamless. With command over swar, tala, and laya, he imparts every note with a poignant emotional depth that lingers with the listener in his heart.
A Universal Voice for India
Rakesh has taken Indian flute sound to esteemed festivals around the globe—from WOMAD in Athens to solo performances in Paris, London, and beyond. He established the fusion group "Rakesh & Friends (RAF)", incorporating bansuri with drums, bass, and keyboards, and engaging new generations of listeners around the world.
Grammy Glory
In 2024, Rakesh became an international award winner as he won two Grammy Awards for the collaborative album "As We Speak", with Zakir Hussain, Béla Fleck, and Edgar Meyer. The album took Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and their song "Pashto" won Best Global Music Performance—a reflection of his versatility and international appeal.

He has been awarded the Indian Music Academy Award, Aditya Birla Kalakiran Puraskar, and Pandit Jasraj Sangeet Ratna, among many others, for his work in the past few years.
