About Ragini Shankar
Ragini Shankar is a renowned Indian violinist recognized for her expertise in Hindustani classical music and creative fusion initiatives. She was born in Varanasi to a family of seven generations of musicians. At the age of four, Ragini started her violin training under the tutelage of her grandmother, Padmabhushan Dr. N. Rajam, and her mother, Dr. Sangeeta Shankar—both accomplished violinists.
Ragini’s style is rooted in the “Gayaki Ang” technique, which mimics the nuances of vocal music on the violin. This unique approach allows her to produce expressive, voice-like melodies that set her apart in the world of Indian classical music.
She made her first public appearance at 11 years old in Bhopal, thus beginning a rich career. Since then, Ragini has been playing at world-class festivals such as the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival, Dover Lane Music Conference, and Saptak Festival. She has toured worldwide across the USA, Canada, Europe, and Southeast Asia, where her heart-stirring playing continues to enthrall audiences.
Ragini is also famous for her innovative fusion works. Together with her sister Nandini Shankar, she co-founded 'Taraana,' a modern violin group that fuses Indian classical music with international sounds. She has collaborated with leading artists and bands like The Ink Band with Irshad Kamil and the Indo-French project 'Sangata' with Thierry Pécou.
Besides acting, Ragini possesses a degree in mechanical engineering as well as a master's degree in music. She has taught at Whistling Woods International – School of Music as an associate faculty member and now instructs at the Rajam School of Violin. Her academic and performing exploits have earned her recognition such as the Aditya Birla Kala Kiran Award and the Jashn-e-Youngistan Award.
