Pandit Gourisankar, born to a family that is fully dedicated to music, began learning the tabla at age three with his father, Pdt. Shib Shankar Karmakar, and continued his studies with the legendary Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, who was also a disciple of three of the world’s greatest percussionists. This deep-rooted lineage has given him a refined technique, exceptional control, and a full range of rhythmic expression across 3 gharanas (Farukhabad, Punjab, and Delhi).

For more than three decades, Pandit Gourisankar has contributed to audiences in India and around the world.
An "A-grade” artist of All India Radio and Television, he has performed alongside famous masters, such as Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Shahid Parvez, etc., demonstrating versatility in both classical music (Indian) and Global music contexts.

In 2008, he established the School of Indian Percussion & Music in Austin, Texas, where he mentored students in the art of Indian rhythmic tradition and further expanded the international presence of Indian classical percussion.
