Niladri Kumar is an eminent Indian sitar virtuoso, composer, and innovator who has been successful in melding traditional Hindustani classical music with modern sounds. He was born in Kolkata in 1973 into a distinguished family of musicians with a lineage of five generations of sitarists. His father and guru, Pandit Kartick Kumar, a disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar, began teaching him the sitar at the tender age of four. By the time he was six, Niladri had started performing in public, showcasing his remarkable talent from an early age.
Niladri draws heavy inspiration from the classical tradition but has made an unerring commitment to innovation. The sitarist is best known for having innovated the Zitar—an instrument that is a combination of a sitar and electric guitar. A five-stringed electric instrument, the zitar permits him to combine classical melodies with rock and electronic genres. Hence, this innovation has rendered classical music not only accessible but also attractive to the younger generations.
He has performed on some of the largest platforms across the globe with greats like Ustad Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin, and Jonas Hellborg. In Bollywood, he has played the sitar and zitar in Dhoom 2, My Name Is Khan, and Aashiqui 2; besides, he has also composed for Laila Majnu and Shorgul.
His discography has acclaimed albums like If, Zitar, Plucked, and Sur Yajna, reflecting his artistry and versatility. His accolades include the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Best Classical/Fusion Instrumental Album from MTV Immies, and Filmfare RD Burman Award for Upcoming Talent in Film Music.
Niladri has an undying passion for education in addition to performing and composing. He is the dean of Maya Somaiya College of Performing Arts at Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai. As a teacher and mentor, he continues to inspire a new generation of musicians to keep the rich heritage of Indian classical music alive and relevant in today's world.
