About Ghatam Giridhar Udupa
Ghatam Giridhar Udupa is India's finest percussionist who has made the humble clay pot—ghatam—a worldwide voice for rhythm and expression. Born on 17th November 1979 in Bengaluru, Giridhar had a culturally vibrant upbringing with music and literature surrounding him. It was at the age of four that he was introduced to rhythm by his father, great mridangam maestro Ullur Nagendra Udupa. Though all percussion instruments such as the mridangam, kanjira, and morsing were taught to him, it was the ghatam that he was most captivated by.
At the age of nine, Giridhar started taking the ghatam seriously under Sukanya Ramgopal, pupil of the greatest T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram. The craft was further nurtured by Vidwan V. Suresh with the help of a coveted scholarship grant from the Government of India. Giridhar devoted himself—practising for as long as six hours a day, particularly in the challenging Manamadurai style with its exquisite quality of tone and heavy clay build.
His enthusiasm came to fruition at an early stage. Giridhar was the youngest ghatam player graded "A" by All India Radio, proclaiming himself to be a force to be reckoned with. He has since traveled the globe in more than 50 nations, sharing bills with titans such as L. Subramaniam, M. Balamuralikrishna, Mandolin Srinivas, and Sudha Raghunathan. His associations have gone far beyond Carnatic music, performing with Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, jazz legends, flamenco artists, and world music ensembles such as Indialucia and Saagara. Not only a performer but also a creative thinker, Giridhar co-founded Layatharanga, a band that fuses classical, folk, and world music forms. In 2015, he founded the Udupa Foundation, an arts foundation that focuses on music education, cultural outreach, and healing through the arts. The foundation also hosts the Udupa Music Festival in Bengaluru, which showcases world legends and new talent.
His artistic skills have earned him many awards like the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awards by The Music Academy, and the Asthana Vidwan title by Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. A video of his blistering Tishra Nadai ghatam solo, which became viral on the internet, has been watched by more than 18 million people, where his talent was seen by the whole world.
Giridhar Udupa is more than a percussionist—he is a storyteller, a trendsetter, and a cultural ambassador, who has redefined the possibilities of what a clay pot can say to the world.
