About Dhruv Ghanekar

Dhruv Ghanekar is a well-known Indian guitarist, composer, and music producer. He is famous for creating music that combines Indian folk traditions with international forms like jazz, funk, blues, and electronica. He resides in Mumbai, and for three decades, he has shaped the independent music scene in India.

Ghanekar initiated his artistic career at a young age, emerging first as an actor and singer and later transforming into a successful guitarist. Found in various acclaimed productions like Susman and Bharat Ek Khoj, he later focused on music as the years progressed; it was the early 1990s when he came to the forefront as a guitarist. In 1993, he formed his first group, Chakraview. Very soon afterward, he co-founded Smoke Music with Ashutosh Phatak. This has been responsible for the music for many films, including Bombay Boys and Tamanna, as well as thousands of ad jingles and background scores.

In 2007, Ghanekar co-founded BlueFrog, one of the first and perhaps most successful live music venues and production companies in India. BlueFrog became an international hub for indie artists and international acts who performed thousands of times in cities around India like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore. Such efforts contributed significantly to establishing the live music culture in India.

As a solo artist, he has released three much-acclaimed albums: Distance (2009), Voyage (2015) and Voyage 2 (2024). His compositions highlight a fusion of Indian folk with modern world music styles. On that note, Voyage 2 emphasises Indian rhythms with samba, Balkan music, jazz, and reggae rhythms. His collaborations expand across a wide range of talented artists, such as Ila Arun, Kalpana Patowary, Mohini Dey, Gino Banks, and Taufiq Qureshi.

Ghanekar has played in festivals across the globe, including the Oslo Jazz Festival and the Borneo Jazz Festival, and has worked on music with world-renowned ones like Richard Bona, Trilok Gurtu, and Zakir Hussain.

Through pioneering compositions, global collaborations, and contributions to India's music infrastructure, Dhruv Ghanekar has established himself as a creative powerhouse in pushing the limits of contemporary Indian music.
