Arjun K. Verma is a Bay Area-based critically acclaimed sitar master and composer who is well known for his skill in North Indian classical music as well as for his experimental cross-genre projects. A member of a musical family, Arjun started studying sitar at the age of five with his father, Roop Verma, a noted student of maestros Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar. He subsequently studied with the great sarode maestro Ali Akbar Khan himself for eight years and continues to have advanced training under his son Alam Khan.
Arjun's music has been heard on some of the world's most renowned stages, including the United Nations in Geneva, San Francisco's Fillmore, the Czech Republic's Prague Castle, and on NBC television. His work evinces a profound respect for traditional Hindustani classical foundations coupled with an embracing of a broad range of modern influences. He has worked with a variety of musicians, including the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir, jazz saxophonist George Brooks, and world-renowned tabla maestro Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri.
Apart from the performance, Arjun is also a skilled composer. He has written original music for documentary films, live theater productions, and live musical performances. Some of his notable works are "River of Light" for the Houston Grand Opera and "Shalimar the Clown" for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. In 2023, he co-composed "The Resonance Between," a groundbreaking album that merges Indian classical music with European classical forms, collaborating with the Del Sol String Quartet and distinguished tabla players.
His 2021 solo album, "EPIPHANIES," is an intimate journey of his connection to the sitar, captured with state-of-the-art audio equipment. Arjun's music has been lauded in international media and resonates with global audiences.
Outside of his performances and recordings, Arjun is a committed teacher, instructing at the Ali Akbar College of Music and the East-West School of Music. His goal is to maintain the richness of Indian classical music and to make it more available for a wider international audience.
