About Yawar Abdal

Yawar Abdal, a singer-songwriter and composer from Srinagar, Kashmir, has been making tremendous progress in the music industry with his innovative blend of traditional Kashmiri music with modern sounds. Yawar was born in 1994, and he developed an interest in music at a young age, prompting him to compose songs and practice extensively, even as a child.

By 16, Yawar had migrated to Pune for computer science studies. Between studies, he started singing at college shows, and the soulful covers found a big audience with great appreciation. Finding balance between pursuing studies and the growth of a music career, the hard work was there on show in Yawar.

After finishing his degree, Yawar got a job with Tech Mahindra. Yet his love for music never waned. He performed at different spots in his spare time, projecting the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir through his songs. This unfaltering search for his musical aspirations ultimately convinced him to make the bold move of quitting his IT career to pursue his career in music exclusively.

In 2017, Yawar dropped his first single, "Tamanna," a track that skillfully weaves together Kashmiri, Persian, and Urdu lyrics, inspired by the works of Mirza Ghalib, Mahjoor, and Amir Khusrow. The music video, which accompanied the song, struck a chord with a broad audience, gaining more than two million views on YouTube and becoming one of the most viewed Kashmiri songs on the site.

With the success of "Tamanna," Yawar remained committed to creating music that brings together traditional Kashmiri sounds and contemporary musical elements. His first album, "Aabad," which came out in 2021, reflects this synthesis, with songs such as "Aaftab (Unplugged)" and "Nundebon." Yawar's skill at being able to crossover between classical Indian music and pop has attracted a broad and loyal fan base.
