About Sufiya Runner
Sufiya Sufi Runner, who was born in 1987 in Ajmer, Rajasthan, is India's first ultra-runner and a record-breaker on some of the world's most challenging surfaces. From being a member of ground staff at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport to being a five-time Guinness World Record holder, Sufiya's drive and passion for ultra-marathons is the ultimate dream for all.
Raised by her single mother after her father's untimely death when she was 16 years old, Sufiya's early life was one of adaptability and self-reliance. In 2017, seeking a respite from the drudgery of night shifts and in the interest of her mental well-being, she began running. What began as a means of keeping fit soon became a long-term passion. She soon left her job to become a full-time ultra-runner, a decision that would make her redefine endurance sports in India.
Sufiya's ultra-running achievements are impressive:
Kashmir to Kanyakumari (2019): She became the fastest woman to complete the 4,000 km journey in 87 days, covering over 45 km per day.
Golden Quadrilateral (2021): She drove 6,002 km in 110 days to set the record for the fastest drive of the Golden Quadrilateral route that goes through Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.
Manali to Leh (2021): She was the first woman to walk this 485 km high-altitude trail.Qatar Run (2023): She broke the record by running the full length of Qatar (approximately 200 km) in 30 hours and 31 minutes, and established a record both for men and women.
Kargil Tribute Run (2022): In honor of the martyrs, she ran 470 km from Siachen to Dras in 6 days and 8 hours on treacherous terrain at high altitudes.
In the coming years, Sufiya hopes to reach a milestone feat: running around the globe. In 2026, she will cover a distance of approximately 40,000 km in 740 days, another feat that would cement her in ultra-running history even further. Advocacy and Inspiration Apart from her sporting achievements, Sufiya is an ardent advocate for women empowerment and mental health. She feels that mental resilience is as crucial in ultra-running as physical endurance and that overcoming mental barriers is as significant as physical strength. She wishes that through her endeavours, she can inspire individuals, especially women, to go against the norm and pursue their passions without inhibition.
