Subhamita Banerjee is a renowned Indian singer and a prolific provider of contemporary Bengali songs and ghazals. She hails from Malda, West Bengal, but was raised in a family rich in music with her father, Shri Joshoda Dulal Das, who was a classical vocalist. Classical music training given to her since childhood helped implant in her heart a strong devotion to Indian classical music, the cornerstone of which has been laid by her very own artistic works.
She perfected her craft with illustrious maestros such as Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar and Vidushi Purnima Chowdhury, learning classical genres such as Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, and Kajri. Though classically trained, Subhamita naturally evolved into the contemporary Bengali music scene, incorporating traditional overtones with modernity.
Her music career bloomed in the early 2000s with albums such as Ichhe Paari (2004), Brishti Paye Paye (2005), and Moner Hodish (2006), which testify to her diversity and emotional range. In 2017, she brought out Ghalibnama, a soul-stirring album dedicated to the works of Mirza Ghalib, proving her mastery over ghazals.
Subhamita's awards and recognitions include the National Scholarship in 1992, the first prize in HMV Golden Talent Contest in 1993, and several Best Female Singer awards for her work in television and film music. In 2021, she was bestowed with the Adhunik Female Vocalist of the Decade title at the Smule Mirchi Music Awards Bangla, establishing herself as a music legend.
Her music crosses borders, enthralling listeners both in India and abroad. With more than 200 songs in tele-serials, telefilms, and feature films, Subhamita continues to make an everlasting impression on the Bengali music scene, inspiring listeners with her soulful voice and unrelenting passion for her work.
