About Shashikala Dani

An eminent Hindustani classical Jaltarang artist from India, Vidushi Shashikala Dani is one of the few musicians to have mastered this rare art of playing the Jaltarang; she is currently reputed to be the only All India Radio-graded female exponent of Jaltarang. Besides her interest in Jaltarang, she is also a multi-instrumentalist: harimba, sitar, violin, dilruba, and tabla.  Moreover, she is an All India Radio-graded vocalist in the Gamaka genre of Hindustani light music.

Particularly fascinated by the Jaltarang, she dedicated herself to the study of the classical music possibilities of the instrument and its expansion. She also experimented with her playing style through the use of Gayaki and Tantrakari angs, integrating an unusual blend of vocal and instrumental techniques. Shashikala was trained in Gwalior Gharana under her father and Guru, Pt. D. R. Warang, who taught her the intricacies of Hindustani classical music.
