Shankar Mahadevan is an iconic Indian playback singer and composer who has been lauded for his incredible vocal range and versatility across genres. A prominent figure in the Indian music industry, he is best known as part of the legendary musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Over the years, Shankar has delivered timeless music that spans film soundtracks, independent albums, and classical compositions.
Shankar was born in Chembur, Mumbai, and showed a great inclination towards music from a very young age. He had trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music besides training in Veena, which has helped to build the foundations for his brilliant career. A computer science graduate, he first worked as a software engineer and then pursued full-time music.
He came into mainstream popularity with his solo song *Breathless* in 1998, a novel composition that came as a single, uninterrupted piece, demonstrating his control over breath and his vocal capabilities. It wasn't long before he joined Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa to create the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio, which changed Indian film music. They collaborated to create blockbuster soundtracks for movies like Dil Chahta Hai Kal Ho Naa Ho, Taare Zameen Par, Bunty Aur Babli, and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Shankar Shankar is a playback singer who has given his supple voice to countless hits across several languages, like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. He is always in demand because of his dynamic voice, undertaking everything from classical to folk, rock, and contemporary styles with ease. Some of the notable songs sung by him are Mitwa, Maa Urvashi, and Kajra Re.
Beyond playback singing, Shankar is an accomplished live performer and the founder of the Shankar Mahadevan Academy, which promotes music education globally. With numerous awards, including multiple National Film Awards, he continues to inspire and shape the music industry, leaving an enduring legacy.
