Sakshi Malik is one of India’s most inspirational athletes, celebrated for her historic achievements in freestyle wrestling and her role as a symbol of perseverance and pride for millions across the country. Born on September 3, 1992, in Mokhra village of Rohtak, Haryana, she discovered her passion for wrestling at the age of 12 and began training in a local akhara, breaking early barriers in a sport dominated by men.
She rose through the ranks with determination, earning medals at junior world events and international tournaments before making history at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In the women’s 58 kg freestyle category, Sakshi secured the bronze medal, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win an Olympic medal—a moment that not only ended India’s medal drought at those Games but also inspired a new generation of female athletes.
Beyond the Olympics, Sakshi has stood on the podium at major competitions like the Commonwealth Games and Asian Wrestling Championships, showcasing her competitive spirit and technical skill. Her relentless work ethic and resilience have earned her some of India’s highest sporting honors, including the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Padma Shri for her contribution to sport.
Off the mat, Sakshi’s journey—from a small village to the Olympic stage—resonates deeply with fans. She remains a respected voice in the sports community and a role model for young athletes, embodying the power of grit, courage, and belief in oneself.
