Rupam Islam, born on 25 January 1974 in Kolkata, India, is a renowned singer-songwriter, composer, and author, best recognized as the lead singer of the Bengali rock band Fossils. Coming from a musical background, with both his parents, Nurul and Chhandita Islam, being musicians, Rupam's early life was filled with music, which provided a solid foundation for his career.
He started performing in early childhood, working on programs on All India Radio (Aakashvani) and Doordarshan at the age of nine. Rupam studied English literature at Asutosh College, which was affiliated with the University of Calcutta, and then earned a Bachelor of Education degree. He was an English teacher at Taki House in Kolkata before giving full attention to his music career.
In 1998, Rupam formed Fossils, a band that would become a cornerstone of the Bengali rock scene. With a discography that includes six albums, Fossils is celebrated for its energetic performances and thought-provoking lyrics. Beyond his work with the band, Rupam has established a successful solo career, contributing as a playback singer to numerous Bengali films.
His outstanding ability was recognized nationally in 2010 when he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his work in the movie "Mahanagar@Kolkata." This award showed his versatility and immense contribution to Indian music.
Rupam's impact transcends performance; he is an active participant at the Bangla Sangeet Academy, a Government of West Bengal institution devoted to the cause of Bengali music and culture. His concern for social causes is reflected in his activism work, especially in the area of women's security in India. In 2024, he released the track "Khoto" ("Wound") as a powerful social commentary on social injustices, a testament to his high levels of empathy and social consciousness.
At a personal level, Rupam married Rupsha Dasgupta in the year 2007 and had a son, Rup Aarohan Prometheus. His evolution from a music-bred childhood into an icon in modern Bengali music highlights his passion, endurance, and dedication to the world of art.
Rupam Islam's lasting influence on Bengali rock and his ongoing attempts to comment on the problems of society through his work create him a key figure in culture, inspiring his peers as well as upcoming generations.
