About Rhea Mazumdar Singhal
Rhea Mazumdar Singhal is an Indian trailblazing entrepreneur and sustainability champion, well recognized as the founder and CEO of Ecoware, India's largest and first sustainable packaging organization. She was born in Mumbai in 1982. She studied at the University of Bristol, Oxford University, and Harvard University. Prior to her return to India in 2009, she was employed in sales at the London office of Pfizer, where she was dismayed by the widespread use of plastic waste. It prompted her to start Ecoware with a funding of $1 million, with the view to developing biodegradable substitutes for disposable plastics.
Ecoware manufactures a variety of disposable products ranging from plates, cups, and cutlery made of agricultural by-products like sugarcane bagasse and wheat straw. They are completely biodegradable within 90 days and hence provide an eco-friendly alternative to the menace of plastic pollution. One of the biggest achievements of Ecoware was to convince Indian Railways, India's largest food service provider, to use its biodegradable trays, which is a big step towards going green in the public sector.
Rhea's vision and leadership have led to her being awarded some of the most prestigious honors. In 2019, she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India's highest civilian honor given to women, for her work in sustainable packaging. She is also a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and an Asia 21 Young Leader of the Asia Society. Moreover, she is the Chairperson of Northern Region of the Indian Women Network and is an invited member of national industry committees dealing with clean air and empowering women.
Outside of her entrepreneurial activities, Rhea is a dynamic speaker and mentor, providing keynote speeches at leading forums like Dreamforce (Salesforce Inc.), The Good Day (Engie), and the Global Investor Conference (Motilal Oswal). She has a special passion for teaching the younger generation about sustainability and inclusive growth, interacting with students and emerging leaders at leading universities and fellowship programs
