Pandit Ajay Pohankar is perhaps the most subtle and expressive singer of Indian classical music, acclaimed for his sweet voice, heartwarming performances, and profound mastery of the Hindustani classical school. Born in 1947 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, he is a member of a family profoundly rooted in music. His mother, Sushilabai Pohankar, was his first guru and herself a well-known classical singer, influencing his initial grounding in music.
A member of the Kirana Gharana school, Pandit Ajay Pohankar evolved a characteristic gayaki (style of singing) that involves technical excellence coupled with depth of emotion. His interpretations are marked by lyrical ease, articulate diction, and a reflective syncretism of tradition and individuality. His interpretation of khayal and thumri has earned him special recognition, and yet he is equally at home with light classical forms like bhajans and ghazals.
Ajay Pohankar started performing right from his early years and won national acclaim as a child prodigy. Throughout the decades, he has performed at great classical music festivals in India and internationally, such as the Dover Lane Music Conference (Kolkata), Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival (Pune), and Saptak Festival (Ahmedabad). With his deep, soulful voice and mature interpretations, he has won over connoisseurs and new listeners alike.
Besides being a respected performer, he is also a music innovator. He worked with his son, award-winning fusion musician Abhijit Pohankar, on recordings such as Piya Bawari, which made classical vocals accessible to a new generation in electronic and lounge production. This blending brought Pandit Pohankar into a new world of acclaim and broadened the audience for his music beyond traditional borders.
His profound insight into raga structure and lyrical beauty enables him to imbue every performance with emotional intensity. He is also renowned for humility, a sense of humor, and rapport with listeners both through the purity of ragas and the depth of bhava (emotion).
For his achievements, Pandit Ajay Pohankar has been honored with many awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India's highest honor in performing arts.
