Formed in 2007, Papon and The East India Company is an electrifying peoples-fusion band based in New Delhi, known for their distinctive blend of Indian folk, electronic, and world music influences. Their vibrant performances have helped the band to be a huge success on the gig circuit both in India and outside, playing some of the best festivals, including Oktoberfest in Bangalore, NH7 Weekender, SAARC Music Festival, Eastwind Festival, MAD Fest Ooty, and Windsong Goa, to name just a few. Internationally, they have also played with Sutasi in Singapore and Dubai World Music Festival.
At the core of the band is Papon, a highly acclaimed singer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. Papon is the son of Assamese music legends Archana Mahanta and Khagen Mahanta, who inducted him into the world of music at a young age. Papon's background is grounded in Indian classical and folk from Assam that formed the roots of his broad spectrum of music, ranging from ambient electronica and acoustic folk to new-age Indian classical.
Papon's career shot to fame with his debut album, The Story So Far (Times Music), in 2012, which won him a GIMA Award. He also gained wide recognition for composing the theme song for MTV Roadies Season 10. His style and emotive performances as a solo artist and with The East India Company have made him a unique figure in the Indian music scenario.
