About Nikhil Chopra
Nikhil Chopra is a multidisciplinary artist who interweaves live art, drawing, painting, and large-scale installations without distinction. He has explored topics like identity, history, storytelling, and transformation through his practice, often shifting the boundaries of performance and visual art. Immersive performances form a part of his work through which he expresses ideas of self-representation, colonial histories, and urban landscapes.
Born in Kolkata, India, Chopra was educated both in fine arts and theater, and the essence of his performance is drawn from improvisation, endurance, and physicality within space. Often, in his works, he assumes a plethora of different personas and characters and draws his sources from both history and personal narration. The simplest acts like dressing, eating, sleeping, or drawing take on a profound significance of time, memory, and belonging.
A large portion of one of his prominent works, "Yog Raj Chitrakar" (2007), involves the impersonation of an itinerant 19th-century draughtsman moving between cities making gigantic charcoal renderings of cityscapes, sometimes for as long as up to days in total. These are always spectacular and long to unfold. These endurance-based works test both physical and mental bounds, which bring the public in for an understanding of work, transformation, and artistic expression.
Chopra has exhibited his work in some of the world's leading international institutions and biennales, such as the Venice Biennale, Sharjah Biennale, Documenta 14 (Kassel & Athens), Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and Serpentine Galleries, London. His creative process is ongoing, with an evolving input from film, photography, and sound to extend the scope of the immersion he creates through his stories.
Nikhil Chopra is a dominant contemporary art figure who challenges the tenets of performance as well as drawing. His art forms part of global conversations regarding identity, migration, and cultural memory. His art remains an exploration about how history, place, and the self interlink and leave an impact on audiences around the world.
