Moheener Ghoraguli was formed by a group of students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur, including Gautam Chattopadhyay, Pradip Chattopadhyay, Tapesh Bandopadhyay, and Ranjon Ghoshal. The band's name translates to "The Horse in the Mist" in English and was inspired by a poem by the Bengali poet Jibanananda Das.
Moheener Ghoraguli's music was characterized by its fusion of Bengali folk music, Western rock, and Indian classical music. The band's lyrics were often inspired by Bengali poetry and literature, and their songs touched upon themes like love, nature, and spirituality. Their music was known for its complex arrangements, innovative use of instruments, and improvisational style.
Moheener Ghoraguli released their first album, titled "Moheener Ghoraguli," in 1977. The album was a critical and commercial success and included songs like "Prithibita Naki Choto Hote Hote," "Dak Diyachen Doyal Amare," and "Katha Diye Ele Na." The band's second album, "Bangla," was released in 1980 and featured songs like "Jhara Samayer Gaan," "Bhooter Raja Dilo Bor," and "Ghorete Bhromor Elo Gunguniye."
Moheener Ghoraguli's music had a significant impact on the Bengali music scene and inspired many other musicians to explore new and unconventional styles of music. The band's influence can be heard in the music of several contemporary Bengali bands, including Cactus, Fossils, and Chandrabindoo.
