About Major Prajakta Desai
Major Prajakta Desai is a renowned ex-officer of the Indian Army, acclaimed for being the first woman in the Indian Army to hold the post of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Observer Pilot in 2020. Her path from anlittle girl who was inspired by watching the movie Border to being a pioneer in military aviation is a true reflection of her grit and perseverance.
Early Life and Military Aspirations
Born in the late 1980s to a humble, middle-class family, Prajakta's dreams were fostered by her parents who urged her to dream big and not be held back by financial limitations. At eight years old, after seeing Border, she told her parents that she wanted to become part of the Army, something she worked towards with relentless dedication. She was a member of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Air Wing from 2007 to 2009 and was exposed to military life and aviation with exposures to microlights and sailplanes.
Defying Odds to be a Part of the Army
Prajakta sat for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination in 2009 and, even though she got the 21st rank, was confronted by the hurdle of few vacancies—there were only 10 seats available. She did not give up, however. She worked at a BPO to take care of her family and still held on to her dream. Then the seats were filled in greater numbers, and she was accepted into the Officers' Training Academy in Chennai in 2010. Following one year of intensive training, she was commissioned as an Army Air Defence Lieutenant in 2011.
Varied Roles and Accomplishments
During her 13 years of service in the Army, Major Desai worked across numerous roles such as Air Traffic Controller, Airport Management, Flight Safety, and Security Inspection. Her postings were in diverse regions of India, from Jodhpur to Srinagar, accepting the challenges and experiences each posting presented. Her dedication to perfection was clearly seen as she became a trained mountaineer, skydiver, hot air balloonist, and microlight pilot.
