Kalpana Gandharv is a talented Indian playback and classical singer who has been gaining attention for her soulful voice, versatility, and traditional depth. Born and raised in Mumbai, Kalpana comes from a musically enriched family. Her father is a violinist, her mother sings semi-classical music, and her maternal grandfather (Nanaji) was a ghazal teacher—music flows naturally in her veins. Coming up in this atmosphere provided her with an early exposure to Indian classical music, film music, and ghazals, all of which influence her music today.

Kalpana's musical education was started at home, where she studied ghazals from her grandfather. Growing up among family members who performed in Bollywood orchestras, she acquired an instinctive sense of melody, emotion, and the subtleties that create a great singer. The grounding in semi-classical and classical music—especially ghazal, thumri, and Sufi—provided the foundation for her distinctive artistic voice.

Her professional journey began with her debut song, “Old School Girl,” from the film Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), composed by Tanishk-Vayu. She also lent her voice to the film Sarabjit (2016), but it was her recent performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi that brought her nationwide fame. The track “Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye,” which was done for the series and personally picked by Bhansali after a live audition, reflected her expressive depth and classical beauty. She described this experience as "a dream come true," and it turned out to be a career-defining moment for her.

Although classically trained, Kalpana is a firm believer in being versatile. In interviews, she has mentioned wanting to work in all genres—be it Bollywood playback, club tracks, Sufi, or ghazals.
