About Dhruv Sangari
Dhruv Sangari, also referred to as Bilal Chishty by his spiritual name, is a prominent Indian classical and Sufi singer, composer, lyricist, and scholar. He was born in 1981 and took up training in Hindustani classical music at the age of seven under Shahana Bannerjee and subsequently under Ustad Iqbal Ahmad Khan. He also trained in tabla under Pt. B.S. Ramanna. His profound experience of Sufi music began under the tutelage of Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami at the Nizamuddin Auliya shrine in Delhi and was further infused by studying the legend of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the mid-1990s.
He is a master in Hindustani classical music from the University of Delhi. His career started sometime in 2000 with hosting TV series dedicated to classical music and ragas. Dhruv was awarded for reinstating and interpreting mystical verses of Sufi saints Rumi, Kabir, and Bedil, and was given the honorary title "Prince of Qawwali."
Dhruv Sangari’s musical work extends across genres and platforms. He has collaborated with Bollywood composers, created original scores for international films like Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, and featured in popular musical platforms such as Coke Studio India. His voice and compositions are deeply rooted in tradition while embracing contemporary elements, making his performances universally appealing.
He is also the co-founder of Ektara India and works actively with the Naadvistaar Foundation for the conservation and dissemination of traditional Sufi music. His performances and workshops have been conducted all over India, Pakistan, Turkey, and the US, involving people in a spiritual and cultural conversation.
