About Baba Sehgal
Baba Sehgal, born Harjeet Singh on November 23, 1969, in Delhi, is a trailblazing Indian rapper, singer, and music composer. Baba Sehgal is most often referred to as the "father of Indian rap." He became popular in the early 90s, a period when rap music was new to India. His mixture of Hindi, Punjabi, and English words with a lively tempo soon made him a popular name.
Baba Sehgal started his career with his debut album Baba Sehgal—Aap Ke Liye in 1992, which turned out to be an instant success. His song Thanda Thanda Pani (1992) was a big hit as he incorporated rap with Indian music sensibilities, and it turned out to be a chartbuster. This song, along with other songs such as Dil Dhadke and Meri Jaan, launched Indian listeners into the world of rap music and displayed Baba's utility as a singer.
His impact on the Indian music scene was not limited to rap alone. Baba Sehgal experimented with other genres like pop, Bollywood playback, and even bhangra, infusing his rap style in these classic genres. His skills at combining humor with music, his witty lyrics, and his high-energy performances made him popular in the 90s.
Apart from his music records, Baba Sehgal also contributed to Bollywood by providing voice for many songs in movies, including Main Tera Dushman (1992) and Aaja Meri Jaan (1997). His contribution to the music industry made rap acceptable in mainstream Indian music.
Baba Sehgal's career has had a long run, and he is still a pathfinder for Indian rap. He has kept evolving his genre of music over time, creating a legacy for himself as one of the greatest influencers in Indian hip-hop and rap music evolution.
