About Anita Sharma
Anita Sharma is a very eminent Indian classical dancer of that era with dexterity in Sattriya, one of eight classical dance forms of India. She was born in Dibrugarh, Assam, on March 1, 1969. Anita started dancing at the age of seven. After the initial training under Roseshwar Saikia Bayan, a traditional guru from Assam, and Padma Shri Jatin Goswami, her knowledge of this art form was effectively augmented by the study of Odissi under pioneers like Gorima Hazarika and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
This educational background gave Anita Sharma a greater understanding and sensibility toward Assamese culture. Besides her artistic input, she has done notable work on Sattriya and Ojapali, another traditional Assamese performance art, under the Sangeet Natak Akademi's Sattriya Kendra.
Anita has danced with diverse choreographic works at celebrated festivals in India: Khajuraho Dance Festival, Konark Dance Festival, and Delhi International Arts Festival. She has also performed under various cultural exchange programmes organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in countries such as the USA, the UK, Sweden, and Australia.
Her contributions to classical dance have not gone unnoticed. In 2014, she was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, which is the highest honour for practicing artists in India. In 2013, she was the recipient of the Devdasi Award at the Devadasi National Dance Festival in Bhubaneswar. The latest award she received in 2024 is the Mahari Award, given by the Pankaj Charan Odissi Research Foundation for her contribution to Indian classical dance.
Anita Sharma is also a founder and director of the Abhinaya Dance Academy in Guwahati, where the next generation of Sattriya dancers is being trained by her. She wants to maintain Assam's classical dance tradition on national and international platforms. Through performances, teaching, and research, Anita Sharma has become the torchbearer of Sattriya and has inspired a host of dancers and cultural lovers across India and beyond.
