About Aabha Harjuna
Aabha Hanjura is an Indian singer-songwriter whose music is a colorful blend of traditional Kashmiri folk with modern sounds. She was born in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, but her family was forced to leave due to the insurgency in the early 1990s, leading them to settle in Jammu and finally Bengaluru. This experience influenced Aabha's musical journey, inspiring her to document and honor her native land's cultural heritage through music.
In 2012, she started her folk-pop group Sufistication with the intention of fusing traditional folk, Sufi qawwali, bhangra, and pop-rock music. The music of the group bridges the generations, taking young listeners to the Kashmiri classic melodies and instruments while ensuring the music stays young and contemporary. Aabha's attempts at reviving old folk sounds have made it possible to highlight the charm of Kashmiri music in the Indian independent music world.
Her breakout song, "Hukus Bukus," released in 2017, became an instant hit and went viral, accumulating millions of views online. The song's popularity extended further when it was featured in the acclaimed web series "The Family Man" and the film "No Fathers in Kashmir," bringing her voice to a national audience.
Aabha's repertoire consists of soulful songs such as "Khanmoej Koor," "Dilbaro Yuier Valo," "Chalo Chinaro Ke Gharon," "Nundbane," "Khoobsurat," and "Madano," demonstrating her diversity as a performer. Her songs are characterized by images of love, yearning, and the allure of her nation, imbued with entrancing melodies and tender words.
Her works in the realm of music have been met with numerous rewards and accolades, such as the Times Power Woman Award for Musical Excellence and the H.E.R. Award under the "We The Women Asia" campaign held in 2019. Her performances were even featured in dignified functions like the Jaipur Literature Festival, where she wowed the masses with her exuberant energy during performances and loud vocals.
