About Surojit Chatterjee
Surojit Chatterjee is a well-known Indian singer, songwriter, and music composer who has made notable contributions to Bengali folk and new-age music. He is most popularly known as the lead singer of the renowned Bengali rock band Bhoomi, which contributed significantly towards an overhaul of the West Bengal folk-fusion music scene. His distinctive style and profound knowledge of Bengali folk songs, combined with contemporary arrangements, have earned him a popular name in the local music scene.
Born and raised in West Bengal, Surojit had a passion for music from a young age. He co-founded Bhoomi in 1999 along with Soumitra Ray. The band introduced a fresh sound by combining Bengali folk elements with urban music, which resonated strongly with audiences. Bhoomi’s songs like Baranday Roddur, Tomar Dekha Nai Re, and Phool Tuley Tuley became immensely popular, making the band a household name in Bengal and among Bengali communities worldwide.
With Bhoomi coming to a fruitful end, Surojit embarked on a personal career, giving out a slew of albums showcasing his musical variety even more so. His independent compositions such as Gaan Bhalobeshe Gaan, Ebar Ashbe Bole, and Folkira earned accolades in terms of wordplay and sonorousness. Surojit's songs regularly carry themes around rural life, the human emotional spectrum, and social causes and thereby connect deeper with the population.
Surojit is also renowned for his energetic live performances, where he transcends the audience with his stage presence and narration through music. His voice possesses a raw, earthy tone that lends authenticity to his tracks, making him distinctive in the contemporary music scene.
