Menwhopause is an indie rock band from New Delhi, India, consisting of four members. It is one of the first bands in India to distribute their music for free online. They got noticed with their debut EP, The Story Begins(2003), followed by their full-length album Home, released independently.
International Recognition & Tours
The band has toured very widely, including two USA tours and an appearance at SXSW 2007 (Austin, Texas). They also did an extensive European tour in 2012, playing main festivals in Estonia, Norway, and France. And they were crowned the Jack Daniels Best Band of the Year Award in 2008, which prompted them to go to Nashville to work with REM's producer Dave Barbe.
Albums & Collaborations
Menwhopause recorded their second album, 'Easy', initially at a campsite in Uttaranchal before spending four years perfecting it. In 2009, they signed with EMI-Virgin Records India, making 'Easy' their major-label debut. The album featured collaborations with Miti Adhikari (Radiohead, Nirvana) and Richard Dodd (Kings of Leon, Tom Petty). Declared a commercial success, Easy was praised by The Times of India as "one of the most brilliant albums by an Indian band."
Social Initiatives & Music Festivals
Beyond their music, Menwhopause works actively for humanitarian causes, particularly by organizing the Tihar Jail Music Workshop Series. It was here that the band helped some inmates form The Flying Souls band and record a few songs for them. Another important curation is of one of India's largest outdoor music festivals, the Ziro Festival of Music.
With global influence and social impact added to their experimentation, Menwhopause remains one of India's iconic independent bands.
