About Hybrid Protokol

Hybrid Protokol shares a common passion derived from Old school Electronic Music, Big Beat, Synthesizers & Music Technology. Soumajit and Aneesh, created Hybrid Protokol in 2014, edging on the sound of "Big Room Dance“. Both have clearly spawned their zeal from the love of early electronica (Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Orbital and such pioneers). Soumajit's Indian classical music background was subsumed into the lava of electronic sounds, and eventually bolstered by the emerging art of recording, mixing and taking on the gadgets 'alive'. Aneesh being one of the brightest kids in the underground scene of Kolkata, with an independent spirit and musicality, combine their musical inspirations into Hybrid Protokol. Hybrid Protokol contains a heavy dose of post-psychedelic sound syndromes. Their live performance reveals an almost rampant and infectious energy on the go, upon a non-stop barrage of synthesizer riffs clinging on solid beats and funky breaks, arps and subversive bass-lines.

Kolkata based electronic duo Hybrid Protokol (Soumajit Ghosh and Aneesh Basu) had released their debut LP called ‘Deep Beyond Belief’ in 2016. Hybrid Protokol specialises in performing their original content "all live" using combination of Elektron Machines, Moog Synths, Organismic Synth from SOMA Labs & Hardware alongside the modern day Ableton software. Their musical style varies from 4 on the floor dance, breaks to alternative techno & acid fused with elements of ethnic folk and acoustic instruments. Their 6 track debut LP ‘Deep Beyond Belief’ really was quite original – earning a seal of approval from the likes of Audio Pervert and online mags like Frequency Asia.

With Deep Beyond Belief, Hybrid Protokol have crafted a spirited love letter to 90s and early 00s techno and electronica. The opening track, Dementia, serves as a mission statement, taking the sounds and structure of microhouse pioneers like Ricardo Villalobos and Luomo and welding on the defining elements of 90s big beat. On this track, as well as throughout the album, the duo move quickly between sounds while still maintaining a coherent throughline. Cassini’s Division frontman Rahul Guha Roy guests on Kundalini, throwing rhymes over Hybrid Protokol’s urgent break beats and curling basslines. On the tracks Waterline and Deep Beyond Belief the group bring in fellow Kolkatan Oh, Rocket on vocals. The title track in particular shines, tapping into the same vein of psychedlic/hypnotic techno that Underworld did on "dubnobasswithmyheadman". Deep Beyond Belief concludes with a return appearance from Rahul Guha Roy, this time with sparse vocals over the lush instrumentation of Atomic In Your Eyes. Hybrid Protokol’s musical influences are clear cut, yet on Deep Beyond Belief they’ve borrowed just the right amount from their heroes and managed to craft a sound and aesthetic they can call their own.

Soumajit learnt and practiced Indian Classical music since a very early age. Electronica bug hit him after he was exposed to the sounds of bands like The Chemical Brothers, et cetera during his college days. His desire to excel in electronic music led him to the unchartered territory of music technology and techniques. Largely self-learnt, Souma's style evolved as a blend of cutting edge electronica and spirituality, deeply rooted in Indian culture. Souma's speciality is improvisational Electronica, where he often surprises the audience with a different interpretation of the same songs.

Aneesh belongs to a family with legacy in music and cinema. He has been fiddling around with music programming software on his bedroom computer since his college days. He grew up listening to electronic music from a very early age. Most notable being Kraftwerk and the like. After obtaining a degree in Sound Engineering from SAE Institute, he started his career as a Sound Designer with a leading recording and post production studio in Kolkata. His passion for 90's electronica sound lead him to practice and perform his unique style of Electronic Music. His music is identified by his aggressive and peppy lead synth riffs which is an integral part of the Protokol’s sonic identity.
