About Chandan Tiwari
Chandan Tiwari is an experimental folk singer from Lokgayan, recognized for her unique method of preserving and presenting classical and folk music. Chandan was born in Bhojpur, Bihar, and grew up in Bokaro, Jharkhand. Chandan has developed a distinctive musical career that fuses the purity of classical and folk music with a new, contemporary flavor. Her commitment to conserving the rich cultural heritage of rural India has established her as a well-known personality in the realm of folk music.
Chandan has demonstrated her artistry through several television shows and radio shows, touching the lives of many with her soulful performances of folk songs. She has produced and hosted a series called Purabiyatan for the past four years, in which she records and brings back to life the lost lanes of villages and the forgotten songs of rural India. Through this project, she has revived these songs and showcased them in fresh and innovative ways on different national platforms. This project is an example of her love for maintaining the folk culture of her native land.
She also fronts the band Purabiyatan, which has collectively assembled almost two dozen great talents. This ensemble ventures into genres as varied as classical and semi-classical music to experimental folk music. A few of her notable renditions include Nirguniyarag, Chiriyane, Sawni Bahar, Basanti Baihar, Radarsia, Sabka Ram, Lok-Parlok, and Charkha. These songs, amongst numerous others, reflect her dexterity in switching between diverse musical territories without straying from her folk background.
Chandan Tiwari's work in the genre of folk music has brought her the accolade of being referred to as the second Sharda Sinha of folk songs. She has achieved widespread appreciation for being able to present traditional music on India's top stages. Her work and performances are a way to not only pay respects to India's folk heritage but also make them contemporary and appealing for audiences today.
